Render Legion has begun posting preview videos of Corona Renderer 2 for 3ds Max, the next major update to its production renderer, on its YouTube channel.
Better compatibility with Phoenix FD and V-Ray, new advanced Bokeh effect
Videos posted so far cover compatibility with Phoenix FD, Chaos Group’s fluid simulation software (above), and a new advanced Bokeh effect for the Corona camera.
The update also improves compatibility with scenes created in V-Ray – now Corona’s sister software, following Chaos Group’s acquisition of Render Legion last year.
According to the notes posted with this demo video, Corona Renderer 2 can render a V-Ray scene without conversion, even without V-Ray installed.
Updated 8 May 2018: Render Legion has posted two more preview videos for Corona Renderer 2 for 3ds Max, both showing new volumetric rendering features.
The one above shows OpenVDB support – it’s an asteroid impact rendered via the new CoronaVolumeGrid – while this one shows the new Inside Volume mode for the existing CoronaVolume material.
Pricing and availability
Render Legion hasn’t announced pricing or a release date for Corona Renderer 2 for 3ds Max yet.

Users have a choice between a perpetual ‘Box’ licence, which costs €449 (around $550), and a ‘Fair SaaS’ rental model, which costs between €24.99 and €44.99 a month ($30-55). You can find more details here.
